This past semester, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in the “Volunteers around the World” flag football fundraiser. Volunteers Around the World (VAW) is an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) devoted to improving the standard of living for those that live in some of the most poverty stricken communities of the Dominican Republic. Their focus is to enhance community infrastructure through improved education, access to more advanced medical treatment, increased economic opportunities, and other community based initiatives.
This organization’s work is done through their volunteers who donate their time and money to help improve the lives of their fellow human beings. The flag football fundraiser was held to help pay for the trip of this year’s volunteers to head down to the Dominican Republic. My friend, Matt, is headed down there as a part of their medical retreat and asked if I would help with the fundraising. Football for a good cause?! Count me in!
It was fun to do and a lot of the UT Dallas students rounded up for this good cause. I got a team together with a couple of my friends and we even had T-shirts made. I met lots of new people at this one-day tournament and made new friends. Each team we played was pretty competitive, but we all knew we had gathered to play for a good cause so it was a very friendly tournament.
My team, Lion Order, actually made it to the semi-finals! It was a great bonding experience and I got the chance to talk to other students who have already been on a VAW trip and hear their stories. It really inspired me to looking into the program and I’m considering going on one of their trips during my senior year. I can’t wait to see what this organization has in store for me!
