For the beginning of a new school year, I decided I needed to do something new and different. I figured I would try out the rock wall at the Activity Center. It was a spur of the moment decision on my way to the Stairmaster and I can definitely say there was more adrenaline involved in this adventure. For me, or people like me who haven’t really done much rock climbing, there was definitely a little fear involved.
When I got to the rock wall I was given a pair of fancy new climbing shoes which crunched my toes just a little bit but I was reassured that this is the way they are supposed to fit. After that I got a little training session and a skills check to make sure I knew how to belay and lock myself into the automatic belay system.
After all the essential info was given to me, it was my turn to give it a try. For at least 5 minutes, I stood there telling my friend, “…yeah maybe we can just come back another time, the info was cool though!” My friend and the guy who just taught me everything I need to know told me I really had to give it a shot. I locked myself it and walked towards the wall trying to decide how I would make it to the top. About half way up I was excited but also ready to stop. It was definitely a work out for me. Once I made it up, then I got to relax. I let my hands off the rock wall and swiftly floated back down to the ground. Since it was my first time, I really didn’t have the stamina to try out all of the hard paths, but I want to go back. It was a great experience because I always knew the rock wall existed but I never knew how much fun I could have with it.
